Matt Searl

LEVEL 2 BTF Coach

I have been involved in Triathlon for over 20 years and completed many events from small Aquathlons to recently undertaking Ironman Lanzarote three times, with all the distances in between under my belt at some point during my sporting career. My main background sport was Swimming / Water Polo which I enjoyed for many years of my youth.

I was one of the founders of the Plymouth Triathlon Club, holding various positions i.e. Chairperson, Head Coach, Webmaster.

I first became a coach in 2004 and undertook my Level 2 in 2007. Since then I have undertaken CPD which includes:-

Open Water Swim coach, Swim Smooth Coach, Sports First Aid, Sports Coach UK Safeguarding and Protecting Children (Enhanced DBS checked), Certificate in British Triathlon Safely coaching static bike sessions and coming soon British Triathlon Strength and Conditioning.

As a coach I enjoy seeing new people coming into the sport and positively encourage them to undertake an event, achieve to the best of their ability and further develop their skills in the three discipline sports of Triathlon. As I like to say “Triathlon, a simple formula: Swim, Bike Run!”

Terry Harvey

LEVEL 2 BTF Coach (undertaking LEVEL 3)

Originally from a running background I entered a triathlon in 1992 for a bet and was immediately addicted. I have raced every season since then over all the distances making my way to four World Championships including Hawaii in 2019. I joined PTC in 2003 & other than work taking me away from Plymouth have been a member ever since. I have held committee positions over the years as Head Coach and Treasurer.

Formally a swimming teacher and scuba diving instructor I started coaching triathlon in 2005. Since then I  have completed CPD courses including Strength and Conditioning, Open Water Swimming, First Aid, Sports Coach UK Safeguarding and Protecting Children.  Currently I’m studying on the BTF High Performing Coaching Program for my Level 3 coaching qualification.

ASA Swimming Coach

I think people will know me as a swimmer!

A total love of the water!

Started swimming as an adult but had a great coach in Cambridge who inspired me to teach and coach.

I have my level 3 Swim England swim coach (and my British Triathlon Level 2) and swim coaching was my job in Cambridge.

I was coerced by the triathletes I met to do triathlon - my first one was in 1994 and went to 3 standard distance Age group world champs.

After setting up the swimming at Cambridge Tri club I the moved to the South West in 2000.

I’ve been in Plymouth since early 2022 and love the tri club - lots of people who want to ‘do’ things!

Everyone knows I like to swim and win but really if I can encourage others to love the sport half as much as I do that would be great.

Swim run is my new thing although I might get my bike out this summer.

Happy to give swimming tips to anyone who’ll listen!

I’m a level 1 coach, I mostly coach at the junior swim session, there is nothing more rewarding than watching the amazing progress of the youngsters over the weeks as there strike and technique improves I’m also the clubs race director, I took over for last years race at mount batten, this year it’s been my task to overhaul the race and move it too a new venue this came about after a discussion with a few other coaches and the fact we wanted a new challenge and a venue to incorporate the children’s event

Simon Porter

I’m a level 1 coach, I mainly coach the Junior Swim and running sessions and have done so now for almost 3 years. I come from a running background however since finding two wheels I find there’s nothing better so is my favourite discipline.

Ella Kerswill

LEVEL 1 BTF Coach (undertaking LEVEL 2)

New kid on the block for coaching. A club member who has come up through the junior ranks.

Ella's Tri Coaching includes BTF Activator Course. BT Level 1 and she is just finishing her Level 2 course.

Rebecca McWass

LEVEL 1 BTF Coach (undertaking LEVEL 2)

I took up triathlon to raise money for charity, I thought how hard can it be, so entered Fritton Triple, a sprint, super sprint and Olympic triathlon over two days. I came last and won a Twix for my efforts as they ran out of medals. I decided to go back the following year, having not learnt my lesson and beat my time.. This was the start of the slippery slope and I’ve since taken part in half ironmans, Long Course Weekend in Wales and Mallorca and I’m the only lady to complete all 5 Outlaw races in one year. I decided to train as a coach as I noticed there was a gap for ‘value for money’ competitors in my old club, we didn’t really get long bike rides or runs as we were ‘slower’ so I decided to train and then I could take people out. I’m currently doing my Level 2 triathlon course and I’m a recent edition to the club having moved here last year. I’m a qualified Level 2 run coach and swim assistant and I’ve done many courses in disability sports and Strength and Conditioning. I love seeing people achieve things they never thought possible, whether that’s swimming a length front crawl for the first time or doing an ironman.
